Gunite Pools in Houston, TX

A gunite pool is a concrete pool formed on site. Steel reinforcement is tied into the pool's shape, and concrete is sprayed over it to create a single, solid shell. Because it is shaped in place, a gunite pool can have curves, raised spas, benches, and varied depths. Creative Lifestyle Pools builds gunite pools in Houston and surrounding communities, and owner Jim Monkemeir stays involved from design through startup. Craftsmanship In Every Detail

A closer look at the artistry, materials and finish we bring to every gunite pools project.

What Gunite Construction Means

A gunite pool is not a product delivered on a truck. It is a structure formed in place. We tie steel reinforcement into a precise shape, then spray concrete over it until a continuous shell forms. That shell can follow curves, steps, benches, raised spas, vanishing edges, and free-form lagoons that prefabricated molds cannot reproduce.

For Houston homeowners who want a pool that feels like part of the property rather than a kit, the structure is the foundation for everything else. Finishes, lighting, water features, and purification systems all perform better when the shell underneath is built with care.

Creative Lifestyle Pools has built pools in Greater Houston since 1974. Jim and the crew do the work themselves, so the design you approve is the structure that gets built, without handoffs that dilute quality.

Gunite and Houston Soil

Much of Greater Houston sits on expansive clay soils that swell when wet and shrink when dry. Add heavy rain, summer heat, and in some areas a high water table, and a pool shell has to be planned for movement and groundwater, not just for looks.

  • Excavation to plan. The hole matches the approved dimensions and depth transitions.
  • Steel placement. Rebar is spaced and tied to the design, then checked before concrete is sprayed.
  • Drainage and groundwater. In areas with high groundwater, we plan for drainage and pressure relief at the design stage.
  • Continuous shell construction. Concrete is sprayed and shaped in one sequence so the shell bonds around the steel.

No builder can promise a pool will never move or crack. What we can say is that experience with local soils shapes how we design, reinforce, and finish. After decades building here, we know the difference between a site that needs extra attention and one that does not.

Shapes, Depths and Features We Build

Because the shell is formed on site, the design is not limited to a catalog.

Free-form and lagoon pools

Natural curves, rock accents, and gradual depth changes. Our Spring, TX project pairs a gunite lagoon with an integrated spa.

Modern and geometric pools

Clean rectangles and crisp coping lines aligned with the architecture of the house.

Courtyard and small-yard pools

Compact gunite pools can make a smaller lot feel larger. One Houston-area owner told us we did not have a large lot, and the design still maximized the space.

Spas and spillways

Raised spas that spill into the pool, shared walls, and separate spa shells are formed as part of the structure.

Baja shelves, tanning ledges and benches

Shallow lounging areas, tanning ledges, and integrated seating are all formed into the shell.

Gunite vs. Fiberglass and Vinyl

For custom shapes, integrated features, and a long-term property improvement, gunite offers the most design freedom. Fiberglass and vinyl can be sensible choices for simpler yards. We will tell you which fits your project.

Feature Gunite Fiberglass Vinyl Liner
Shape and size Fully custom Limited to available molds Wide range, simpler shapes
Depth transitions Custom Fixed by the shell Moderate flexibility
Structure Steel-reinforced concrete, formed on site Prefabricated shell, set in the excavation Wall panels with a liner
Integrated spas and features Built into the structure Limited by mold Limited
Surface renewal Interior finish renewed over time Gel coat repairs Liner replacement is a recurring cost
Best fit Custom, permanent backyards Standard layouts, quicker installs Budget-focused, simpler designs

What Affects Gunite Pool Cost and Timeline

Gunite pool prices vary a great deal, and any quote that does not look at your yard is a guess. These factors move cost and schedule most:

  • Pool size, depth, and shape complexity
  • Spa, water features, and vanishing edges
  • Interior finish and tile
  • Site access, soil conditions, and drainage needs
  • Decking, coping, lighting, and automation
  • Permit and HOA review time, and weather

We discuss priorities early and shape the plan to your budget, so you know where the money goes. Financing is available through our partner, Lyon Financial.

Gunite Pools with Ozone, Alkaline Water and Equipment

A gunite shell works well with the water systems we install. We plan ozone pool systems and alkaline pool water with the equipment pad and plumbing from day one. Owners of our ozone pools describe clear, soft water and short maintenance routines. One six-year owner in Spring, TX says about ten minutes every few days keeps the water clear. We can also provide equipment for new pools, sized to the pool and its features.

Gunite Pool Builder Serving Houston and Up to 50 Miles Around

We build gunite pools across Greater Houston, within about 50 miles of our Houston base. Choose your community to see local projects and questions.

  • Northwest: Cypress · Towne Lake · Bridgeland · Copper Lake · Tomball · Hockley
  • North: Spring · The Woodlands · Magnolia
  • West and southwest: Katy · Cinco Ranch · Sugar Land
  • Inner loop and nearby: Houston · The Heights · Garden Oaks · Bellaire

We have also built gunite pools in Conroe, Kingwood, and Pearland. Local conditions differ. Larger lots in northwest and north Houston often allow free-form designs with rock features. Inner-loop yards are usually tighter, and courtyard-style gunite pools can fit well. Master-planned communities and some neighborhoods require HOA or architectural review, and permits come from the city or county, depending on where you live. We plan for those steps early.

Why Owners Choose Creative Lifestyle Pools

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

A gunite pool is a concrete pool formed on site by tying steel reinforcement into the pool's shape and spraying concrete over it. The result is one continuous shell. This allows custom shapes, depths, spas, and built-in features.

All three describe steel-reinforced concrete pools. Gunite and shotcrete refer to sprayed concrete methods, and concrete is the general term. When comparing quotes, ask how the shell is built and who supervises it.

In everyday language, yes. Both mean a permanent concrete pool. The difference people usually mean is the interior finish, such as plaster, pebble, or glass tile.

For custom shapes, depths, and integrated spas or water features, gunite gives the most design freedom. Fiberglass and vinyl suit simpler layouts. The best choice depends on your yard, budget, and plans.

It can be, when excavation, steel, and shell work are done correctly. Houston's expansive clay and groundwater need to be planned for. Ask any builder how they handle drainage and soil movement.

Concrete can develop cracks, and no builder can promise otherwise. Proper steel placement, compaction, drainage, and finishing reduce the risk, and a well-built shell can often be repaired if needed.

The shell is built to last for decades with proper care. Interior finishes are renewed on a shorter cycle.

Commonly every 15 to 20 years with proper care, depending on the finish, water balance, and use.

Cost depends on size, shape, spa and water features, finish, site conditions, decking, and equipment. A reliable number requires a look at your yard. Call (281) 455-9691 for a conversation about scope and budget.

It depends on design complexity, permits, HOA review, weather, and features. We give you a realistic schedule when pricing is confirmed.

No. The shell must cure, then tile, coping, interior finish, plumbing, and equipment are completed. The pool is filled and balanced at startup.

Usually yes. Pool permits and barrier requirements come from your city or county, and many communities require HOA or architectural approval. We help plan for these steps.

Yes. Compact courtyard and plunge-style gunite pools can be shaped to the lot, with benches and ledges to make the most of the space.

Yes. Spas can be raised, attached, or separate, and can spill into the pool.

When the site allows. Vanishing edges and sheer descents need careful planning of elevations and plumbing.

A Baja shelf is a shallow area, often 6 to 12 inches deep, for lounging or placing chairs. It is formed into the shell.

Yes. Rock waterfalls, spillways, scuppers, and fire-and-water bowls can be built into the design. See our water features page.

It depends on look, texture, and upkeep. Plaster is smooth and classic. Pebble and quartz add texture and color depth. Glass tile works for accents.

Yes. We plan these with the equipment pad and plumbing from the start.

All pools need regular care. One of our ozone pool owners reports about ten minutes every few days. Results vary by pool, system, and use.
